Within the broad field of neuropsychopharmacology, Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders (OCDs) represent a captivating area of ongoing research and clinical interest. Recent advancements in research have shed new light on the pathophysiology and etiology of these disorders, paving the way for novel therapeutic targets and a deeper understanding of the underlying brain mechanisms involved.

With the aim of spreading the current knowledge of these disorders and enhancing the expertise of those involved in their management, from June 19th to 23rd, 2024, a significant Training Masterclass took place in Taormina (Sicily, Italy), organized by the ECNP Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders Network (ECNP-OCRN) and the International College of Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum Disorders (ICOCS).

Masterclass Details

The Masterclass was conducted in a hybrid format over 5 days, during which participants had the opportunity to engage in lectures, seminars, video presentations, and practical case exercises on a multitude of important topics related to OCDs.

The ECNP-OCRN-ICOCS Training Masterclass featured the participation of 30 prominent international speakers, carefully selected by the expert ECNP-OCRN and ICOCS groups. The masterclass program was meticulously crafted to equip participants with a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of OCDs. Specifically, attendees gained in-depth knowledge across a spectrum of crucial OCDS-related topics, including:

  1. Diagnosis and Assessment

  2. Neurobiology, Clinical Insights, and Comorbidities

  3. Animal Models

  4. Neuroimaging Data

  5. Therapeutic Interventions

The Masterclass was aimed at early career fellows, residents, researchers, and clinicians in the field of neuropsychopharmacology from around the world, such as neurobiologists, geneticists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and pharmacologists.

Dr. Pallanti's Contributions to the Training Masterclass

Dr. Stefano Pallanti is one of the leading experts on OCD in the world. As a member of both the International College of Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders (ICOCS) and the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology's Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders Network (ECNP-OCRN), Dr. Pallanti gave lectures at the masterclass bringing a wealth of knowledge and clinical experience.

As a leading expert on the topics covered by the Training Masterclass, Dr. Pallanti has been invited to contribute with two particularly significant lectures.

"PANDAS and neuro-immuno-biology"

πŸ“… Date: June 20th, 2024

In this first presentation, Dr. Pallanti unraveled the intricate interplay between neuro-immuno-biological factors and OCDS development, with a particular focus on PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections), a condition characterized by the sudden onset of neuropsychiatric disorders following streptococcal infections. Recent studies suggest a possible link between the immune system's response to infections and the onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms, often characterized by OCDS features. Dr. Pallanti's presentation shed light on this and other hypotheses and the implications of these findings for the diagnosis and treatment of this pediatric syndrome.

"Defining response, remission and treatment-resistance"

πŸ“… Date: June 22nd, 2024

Drawing upon the latest research and his extensive clinical experience, in this second presentation for the ECNP-OCRN-ICOCS Training Masterclass Dr. Pallanti equipped participants with the most up-to-date criteria for evaluating treatment efficacy in OCDs, derived from the study of the latest literature integrated with his extensive clinical experience in these disorders. Establishing whether a patient is responding to therapy accurately, has achieved symptom remission, or is experiencing treatment resistance represents a critically important factor in treatment personalization. As a leading global expert on OCD, Dr. Pallanti offered clinicians and researchers an essential guide for managing these complex disorders and their study.
